Pivotal Response Therapy (PRT) is a natural, play based therapeutic approach that focuses on building a few key “pivotal” skills such as motivation, communication, self-initiation, and self-management that can positively impact many areas of development at once. Rooted in behavioural science but delivered in a much more flexible, child led way, PRT follows the individual’s interests and uses everyday play and routines as meaningful learning opportunities. Instead of relying on structured drills, skills are encouraged through natural rewards, such as receiving a desired toy, activity, or social connection, which helps learning feel enjoyable and purposeful. For autistic and ADHD individuals, this approach can feel especially supportive because it reduces pressure, honours their interests, and encourages communication and social engagement in a way that feels safe and motivating. By strengthening confidence, independence, and self directed learning, PRT helps neurodivergent individuals build skills that carry naturally into real life settings within a warm, affirming, and strengths based environment. PRT is especially suited to young children but can also be adapted for older children and teenagers who benefit from play based, interest led learning.
